CherryPal Announces the “Bing” Netbook
CherryPal founder Max Seybold has announced the launch of CherryPal’s first netbook, called “Bing.” The scheduled date for delivery of the first Bings is March. From his blog:
The Bing is based on the Intel Atom N270 processor, 10.2″ screen, full keyboard and web browsing capabilities, local applications as well as cloud access, brilliant multi-media experience. We are also looking into some other interesting platforms as we speak.
Unfortunately, for your PowerPC chip afficionados, it looks like this CherryPal will be running off Intel. With that, I have no idea at this time whether this CherryPal will be another low wattage computer, or if it will be expressing its “greenness” in other ways.
In other CherryPal news, some work is being done on securing better PowerVR drivers for the CherryPal C114 desktop. I believe this means we’ll eventually have an OS upgrade that utilizes the processor better. I’ve also been told that USB boot will be available at some point.

Orphaned already? That’s very sad. The MPC5121e seemed like such a promising little MOC (motherboard-on-chip), but without good software support even the best architectures get nowhere. Who remembers the AMD 29000, which could have put AMD on top if things happened differently? And it looks like Freescale is basically giving up on the MPC5121e in favor of the ARM Cortex-A8 based i.MX51 for consumer applications: http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS4076319239.html
I don’t see how CherryPal as a company is going to compete with the dozens of identical Atom-based netbooks that will be coming out momentarily. What exactly will distinguish Bing from its competition, other than a higher price? I don’t see how it will be any “greener”.
Yep, interesting that they won’t indicate how much power Bing will use. According to http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7010920550.html, the Atom N270 chip uses 2.5W by itself, more than the entire CherryPal… and the N270 needs a separate chip for graphics.
I have purchased many low power requirement, small form factor pc’s and have my favorites for my specific applications.
My experience as of today (1/18/09) is that the Slim Fit-PC is optimized for low current requirements, low price, superior performance, good connectability, and excellent network access. I learned that in two months they will have a new N-70 model which will provide more processing power with minimal increase in current requirements. I require a keyboard, mouse or monitor for my application ONLy when first setting it up. After set up, it works perfectly for my application as a stand alone server. It has exciting features such as a LAN port which I use as for a network input. When connected to a small network switch, I can have five additional network inputs. It has USB 2.0 inputs and a built in Wi-Fi hot spot which I use as either an additional network input or for remote administration from a notebook PC (for troubleshooting). The Slim can be mounted almost anywhere. Finally I have a small PC that does what I want. All I need now is lower power requirements –LOL- and a more powerful microprocessor.—LOL
I use Ubuntu 8.1 (EXCELLENT—with added unregistered CODECS —and after removing apps I do not need) and/or PuppyOS.
This little box is AMAZING– but it is not a notebook PC. It has no monitor. But I can use it for processing power and it fits in my front pocket! It wokrs better than some Intel Core 2 DUO notebooks running a POWER PIG OS —WINdoZE any version. I can do the processing work with nominal 5-7 watts and Linux what a continuous 80 watts does running WINXP with 1/5 the load!
Please please —if you are a Windoze user —visit Microsoft Tech support and download FREE Windows Process Explorer. Run your application and watch EACH OF the cores burn at 110% doing almost NOTHING but the OS!.
Now try with a Fit-PC SLIM. It does a little warm—but I only need 5 WATTS or less to run PUPPYOS!
In 60 daYS THE NEW N70 SLIM will kick *ss on any other low powered computer + most all Notebooks.
Ask this question. Did you buy ypur computer to use as a welder or as a computer. Windows + most any modern computer will have a HUGE energy penalty. Think how many billions of gallons of imported oil is used to run WINDOWS—- WITH NO OTHER APPLICATION. How many more Billions of gallons of oil are needed to write an email or use a word processor?
Oh, I forgot—I removed the stupid nineteenth century motor driven hard drive and am using a SOLID STATE HARD DRIVE. It takes less than 5 minutes for the upgrade.
CAUTION: If you use Linux (PuppyOS or massaged –nonessential apps removed- Ubuntu 8.1) plus the SLIM PC you will be FORCED to relearn to type. ITS THAT FAST! You will get blisters from typing so fast. No kerchunk kerchunk and “Are you sure you—blah blah” prompts from an idiot OS designed for idiots.
I’m with you, GTG. The Bing looks like just another Atom netbook to me. Why isn’t CherryPal going with that LimeBook THTF demoed at CES?
