I've just like to rebut stealyourwife ;with the fact that "puppy linux" is an exception in that it will boot from the live cd and then run in ram, which can use "less" electricity in the long run too...

Gustavo, that does sound normal -although after about 5 minutes the daemons settle down and you'd see the OS using ?alot? less that that -oh and notice that firefox (a must i say) will prolly use about 140mb alot of the time... I'd also/always recommend puppy linux (v4.12 or 'stardust')

I've trying few linux distros with LXDE as the default desktop environment and I found PCLinuxOS LXDE 2009 bit ahead of the others. Why? Easy installation of Compiz-Fuzion and Synaptic Package Manager. It didn't got me away with work arounds but it's okay because it's a linux afterall ;)

Hi, ijust tried Pclinux 2009 LXDE because I have got an old PIII with 384 mb of ram. I just got a question, i hope you guy would help me with it. I tried the Live CD on a laptop (1,5 Ghz intel centrino, 1gb ram), and when i checked the memory status, it showed a use of 200 mb ram with the system just loaded (no programm running). I´d like to know if this is normal, and if i´m going to have problems with my old Pentium. Thanks for the answers.

FastGame, it seems part of the challenge of Linux is finding a distro that works on your particular hardware. I just downloaded Fedora 11 to try on my Gateway laptop. Couldn't even get the Live CD to work because I have an ATI graphics card. I'd love to try the Fedora distro, but why use a kernel that can't recognize a popular graphics card?

[...] PCLinuxOS LXDE (PCLXDE) 2009 Review Verdict: Big thumbs up. I would highly recommend PCLinuxOS 2009, the LXDE version, to anyone who has an old computer that needs new life breathed into it. This is probably the best Linux distro I’ve found for this computer, and I’m going to keep it. [...]

Been a PCLOS user for a long time, this version has lots of promise....and some big problems as well :(

The LXDE version doesn't detect USB modems (dial-up) correctly, they're detected as 3G and it wants pin # and sim card installed....hmmm No other version of PCLOS (including older TinyMe) has this problem.

For some reason (maybe I don't know how) I can't get system fonts to change size, some theme fonts and right click> desktop> menu- change size, the rest all stay the same.....kind of hard to see fonts on a high res laptop :(

I also had a real hard time getting my DYNEX enhanced G card ( broadcom 43XX) going. This card is plug & play in Puppy Linux.

If I can get the font & modem problem solved I'll change from Puppy, PCLOS-LXDE looks real nice.

Thanks for the comments. I somehow only saw the guest login and once you are running the OS via Live CD, there is no information posted re: the passwords. Once logged in as guest, you still need to enter in the root password for installation, which is not entirely obvious. So when I went to click on "install" I just had no clue what to enter into the box asking for a password. I'm usually pretty savvy, so I figured if I could miss this a newbie could be even more confused.

The log in information is available on the login screen in large letters - upper left corner. This information is on the live CD but is removed during installation.

Since PCLXDE was released, a new application for changing the cursor theme has been scripted and made available in the repositories. It is called lxcursor and can be launched from the LXDE Control Center after installation. Updates to the core LXDE applications are available from the PCLinuxOS repositories, also.

I found the login information on the login screen in the upper left corner. Maybe it needs to be brighter text.

root pass root
guest pass guest

Midori is a webkit based browser. I found it to be a little crashy as it is still in development so I switched to Opera which works well.
